SCSI OVER IP: iSCSI. IT managers now have a choice when considering storage area networks (SANs). With the new industry standard iSCSI protocol, Ethernet networks can now be used to build SANs. iSCSI based SANs will provide the same benefits as Fibre Channel SANs, but they use TCP/IP, which is more familiar to many IT managers. In addition, iSCSI enables seamless integration to wide area networks (WANs), enabling new applications such as remote storage.
ENHANCED TOTAL SYSTEM PERFORMANCE. The QLA4010 implements the complete protocol stack including Ethernet, TCP/IP and iSCSI on a single chip and offloads all I/0 protocol processing from the host system. This complete offload of the host eliminates the protocol processing load of TCP/IP, and also reduces CPU interrupts. At 1-Gbps speeds, these I/0 protocol burdens placed on the host system are significant and reduce the bandwidth available to other applications running on the host. The QLA4010 maximizes I/O bandwidth and allows the host system to deliver optimum
application performance. The QLA4010 architecture combines a hardware state-based design with embedded processors to provide the optimum mix of performance and flexibility. This flexible architecture allows firmware upgrades to support changes to the iSCSI standard. Updated firmware, drivers, and management software are available on the QLogic website, support.qlogic.com.
Features and Benefits
- Supports current iSCSI standard, with firmware downloads as standards evolve
- Complete iSCSI and TCP/IP protocol offload

- Integrated SAN management software
- Comprehensive suite of software drivers
- Optical and copper models

Converged Network Apapters
Converged Network Adapters (CNAs) consolidate the data networking of a NIC with the storage networking of an FC HBA onto a single 10-GbE Ethernet adapter, resulting in significant datacenter cost savings while preserving existing investment in Fibre Channel storage and tools. |
Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) Technology
FCoE provides an opportunity to reduce data center costs by converging data and storage networking. Standard TCP/IP and Fibre Channel traffic can both run on the same high speed 10-GbE Ethernet wire, resulting in cost savings through reduced adapter, switch, cabling, power, cooling, and management requirements. FCoE has gained rapid market traction because it delivers excellent performance, reduces data center TCO, and protects current data center investment.
High Performance
The QLE8042 CNA provides superior data and networking storage performance at 10-GbE speeds, which benefits bandwidth hungry applications. This performance also enables increased levels of server virtualization, as multicore servers running dozens of virtual machine OS images will need the cutting edge 10-GbE bandwidth to prevent I/O starvation.
Lower TCO
The QLE8042 reduces data center costs through convergence. Now, one CNA can do the work of a discrete FC Host Bus Adapter (HBA) and Ethernet NIC. This convergence also means fewer cables, fewer switches, less power consumption, reduced cooling, and easier management. The QLE8042 also preserves familiar FC concepts such as WWNs, FC-IDs, LUN masking, and zoning, thereby eliminating training costs that would be required for a new storage technology.
Investment Protection
The QLE8042 and FCoE are designed to preserve existing investment in Fibre Channel storage and core Ethernet switches and routers for data networking. The QLE8042 leverages the same identical software and driver stacks that have been deployed and battle-hardened in millions of previous installations.
Proven Fibre Channel & Ethernet Exprerience
QLogic has an unparalleled advantage in delivering this new CNA technology. QLogic is the undisputed leader in both FC and iSCSI HBAs, with years of experience providing FC and Ethernet based products. While some competitors have expertise in either networking or storage, no other I/O provider can match QLogic's expertise in FC and Ethernet hardware and software solutions.
