Management Team


Victor Walker: Chief Executive Officer

With more than two decades of executive leadership in storage and systems technology, Victor brings extensive startup and Global 500 experience to Starboard Storage. Victor was COO and co-founder at ClusterStor, a storage company specializing in high-performance file systems that was acquired by Xyratex in mid-2010. Prior to ClusterStor, Victor served as Vice President of Sun Microsystems’ Storage Systems Product Group, where he led the development and initial revenue release of the Sun 7000 Unified Storage product line (now the Oracle Sun ZFS storage line), and Sun’s open storage products line.

Karl Chen: Chief Marketing Officer

Karl possesses more than 25 years of experience in IT Technology strategy and business management. As a successful entrepreneur, he specializes in storage, distributed systems, enterprise software and virtualization. He has successfully built and sold two entrepreneurial start-up businesses including LeftHand Networks, which was acquired by HP for $360M in November 2008 and NuView ManageX, which was acquired in 1997 by HP OpenView. Karl was VP of Marketing at BMC Software and held executive roles at Hewlett-Packard, Dell, and Compaq.

Lee Johns: Vice President of Product Marketing

Lee has over 20 year experience in business and product management in the technology industry, where he has specialized in IT convergence. A native of the UK, Lee was previously Director of Product Marketing for Storage at Hewlett Packard (HP). In this role he was responsible for bringing to market the entire portfolio of HP storage products including HP 3PAR, LeftHand, EVA, MSA, IBRIX and StoreOnce deduplication. Lee has also held Marketing Director positions in server and software products including Compaq ProLiant Servers, HP BladeSystem and HP Systems Insight Manager.

John Potochnik: Vice President of Engineering Operations

John has more than 20 years leadership experience in the development of successful, high performance technology at both startup and Global 200 companies. John was Co-Founder and Director of Software Development at Blue Spruce Networks, an advanced storage virtualization software company that was sold to Pirus Networks in 2001. Pirus Networks was subsequently acquired by Sun Microsystems in 2003. John also brings experience at leading companies including LSI Logic, Symbios Logic, AT&T, and NCR.

Kirill Malkin: Chief Technology Officer

Kirill is the chief architect of Starboard Storage Systems’ Application-Crafted Storage. Kirill has more than fifteen years of experience in the computer systems, data storage, networking technologies and enterprise software development industries. He was founder and CEO of Reliable Data Technology, Inc. from 1993 until 2005, when the company was acquired by RELDATA. Previously, Kirill held key development roles at Cantor Fitzgerald and Chase Manhattan Bank.

Mark Eagle: Vice President Customer Service and Operations

Mark has over 20 years of executive team experience directing customer service, operations and product delivery at startup and Fortune 500 companies. Prior to Starboard Storage, Mark served as EVP, Products and Services at Encoda Systems, he led the successful launch and growth of Encoda’s international product line, leading to the company’s sale to Harris Corporation for over $400M. Prior to Encoda, Mark was COO at College Partnership, Inc., where he engineered a turnaround of operations resulting in cost savings of 30 percent.

Paul Stukus: Chief Financial Officer

Paul brings to Starboard Storage Systems more than sixteen years experience leading accounting and finance, business operations, and human resources in venture-backed technology companies. Paul successfully built three venture-backed start-ups including Digene, which he took through an IPO (now Qiagen NASDAQ:QGEN), and Cyveillance Inc. which was acquired by QinetiQ N.A. He also has director-level experience at a Virginia-based investment company.

Russell Wine: Director of Sales

Russell is a Storage Sales and Business Development professional with over 15 years executive management experience in channel sales development. Prior to Starboard Storage, Russell served at RELDATA as Worldwide Channel Sales Executive responsible for North America and EMEA. He started his sales career as a leading producer for key value-added resellers. Russell began his career in high technology with the United States Navy, where he served for nine years abroad in support of advanced avionics IT subsystems in some of the most sophisticated IT environments.

Laurie Gray: Director of Business Development

Laurie has more than 18 years of business development and sales management experience with an exceptional track record of creating and driving revenue growth strategies. Prior to Starboard Storage Systems, she served in varied leadership positions at major technology firms, including Gartner Group, LSI Corporation, and Advanced Micro Devices. Throughout her career, she has successfully developed strategic partnerships, conducted senior executive sales, and led cross-functional sales, marketing, product, and technical support teams.

Bill Chambers: Chairman of the Board, Starboard Storage Systems

Bill has more than 25 years experience in storage and business management and strategy leading both start-up and Fortune 100 companies. A visionary and successful entrepreneur, Bill was Founder, president and CEO at LeftHand Networks where he grew the company from $0 - $100M. LeftHand Networks was successfully sold to Hewlett Packard in November 2008 for $360M. Bill became vice president of HP StorageWorks, the new LeftHand product line of Hewlett Packard.

Dennis Johnson: Advisor to the Board

Former Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Compellent, Dennis has a track record for building loyal, high performance teams that consistently achieve aggressive revenue, growth and profitability targets. He has guided over ten companies to profitability across multiple segments of the technology industry including hardware/software manufacturers, value added resellers (VARS), service providers, and professional service organizations. As Executive Vice President (EVP) of Sales and Marketing for Compellent, a start-up in 2002, his team helped them achieve profitability and a listing on the NYSE in 2007. As EVP of Sales for Xiotech, revenue increased from $5M to a run rate over $100M in just 2 years. They were purchased by Seagate for $360 million. During his tenure as President and CEO of XATA, the organization achieved Inc.’s List of 100 Fastest Growing Companies and he led an IPO for a listing on NASDAQ.

John McArthur: President, Walden Technology Partners

John McArthur was previously group vice president and general manager for Information Infrastructure and Enabling Technologies at privately-held technology market research firm, IDC. At IDC, Mr. McArthur managed a worldwide team of analysts serving IT professionals, investors, resellers, distributors, and manufacturers. He also oversaw IDC’s small and medium business, hardware channels, pricing, and leasing services. While at IDC, Mr. McArthur became an internationally recognized speaker on storage and storage management trends and was a featured speaker at end-user, trade-organization, and sales-training events.

Andreas Rüter: Chairman, Grazia Equity GmbH

Andreas Rüter has been a partner at Grazia Equity GmbH since 2006. At Grazia, Mr. Rüter focuses on overseeing the development of innovative technology corporations in the areas of IT, new media and Clean Tech. Mr. Rüter began his career as a manufacturing engineer with a diesel engine manufacturer in Cape Town, South Africa. He then worked for Accenture before joining the management and technology consultancy Booz Allen Hamilton beginning in 1994. At Booz Allen, Mr. Rüter was promoted to partner and managing director leading the company’s European IT practice. In 2004 he was appointed a member of the Global IT Management Committee and the European board of directors. Mr. Rüter earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Technical University of Munich, Germany.

Alec Rauschenbusch: Managing Director, Grazia Equity GmbH

Alec Rauschenbusch founded Grazia Equity GmbH in 2000 and has worked as a venture capital investor and business angel since 1997. In 2001 Mr. Rauschenbusch was awarded the prestigious Golden Nose award as the German Business Angel of the Year by the Business Angel Network of Germany (BAND). He also founded 5r Private Equity KG in 1998 after several years of successful entrepreneurial activities. Before helping young technology companies he first worked as internal consultant for ABB and later as head of strategy and corporate development of Behr Group, a major car supplier. Alec Rauschenbusch earned a master degree in aerospace engineering from Technical University in Munich, Germany and a MBA from Harvard Business School.
